What is the Subclass 500 Student Visa?

The Subclass 500 Student Visa allows international students to study full-time at a recognised educational institution in Australia. It permits a stay of up to 5 years, depending on the duration of your course.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Subclass 500 Visa?

To be eligible, you must: 

-Be enrolled in a full-time course registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). 

-Provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Meet English language proficiency requirements. 

-Have adequate health insurance (Overseas Student Health Cover - OSHC). 

-Demonstrate sufficient financial capacity. Satisfy the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. 

-Meet health and character requirements.  

What is the Genuine Student (GS) requirement?

The GS requirement assesses whether you genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily for the purpose of study. Factors considered include your immigration history, circumstances in your home country, and the value of the course to your future.

What English language tests are accepted, and what are the minimum scores?

Accepted tests and minimum scores: 

-IELTS: Overall score of 5.5. 

-TOEFL iBT: Score of 46. 

-PTE Academic: Score of 42. 

-Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): Score of 162. 

-Occupational English Test (OET): B for each test component.  

Note: Some institutions may have higher requirements depending on the course you choose.  

Are there exemptions to the English language requirement?

Yes, exemptions apply if you:

Are a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, or Ireland.

Have completed at least five years of study in English in certain countries.

Have completed certain qualifications in Australia.

What is Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), and is it mandatory?

OSHC is mandatory health insurance for international students. It covers medical and hospital care, and must be maintained for the duration of your stay in Australia.

Can I work while studying on a Subclass 500 Visa?

Yes, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during your course and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.

Can I include family members in my visa application?

Yes, you can include your spouse or de facto partner and dependent children in your application. They must meet health and character requirements and have adequate health insurance.

What is the process for applying for the Subclass 500 Visa?

  1. Choose a course and institution. 

  2. Obtain a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). 

  3. Gather required documents (e.g., passport, financial evidence, English proficiency). 

  4. Apply online through Immi Account. 

  5. Pay the visa application fee.

What happens after I complete my studies?
