With the ongoing strong economy and property market in Australia has become a promising migration destination in the world.
Various states in Australia have a great demand for skilled workers from various occupations and there is a significant amount of foreign nationals especially international students from over 100 different countries working part-time in various industry sectors like hospitality, cleaning, retail, fruit picking etc. States of New South Wales (Capital: Sydney) and Victoria (Capital: Melbourne) have the highest number of such international students with them receiving 32.5% and 25% respectively of the total 200,000 migrations to Australia annually.
A proportion of this population is now being diverted island-state off the south coast of Australia, Tasmania. The introduction of a new visa category subclass 489 for overseas applicants by the Government of Tasmania not only allows them to work here for up to a period of four years but also offers them a pathway to apply for permanent resident status (PR visa) in Australia.

Different states and territories of Australia have different their own skilled occupation list and eligibility requirement eg: IELTS score, Job offer or study requirement etc. These requirements are framed according to the economic and skill requirements of that particular state. As such, the state’s migration program is underpinned by such fundamentals of the job market. Australia independent skilled migration policy is a points-based one, where applicants are selected based on their respective points (Minimum points to apply for EOI – Expression of Interest for various visa subclasses is currently 60). The Australian independent Skilled – Independent Visa is offered to candidates who are not sponsored by a state or employer and allows them to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.
Currently with the Tasmania government migration program, an applicant may be eligible to directly apply for a PR after living in Tasmania for two years and having a full-time job for a minimum of 1 year during this period. (Full-time work is 38-40 hours per week.)

The reforms to Tasmania’s State Nomination Policy, which came into effect on July 1, 2017, are aimed at offering security to skilled migrants and to ensure the filling up of the existing job demand in the state.
The reasons for lots of international students currently living in Sydney and Melbourne moving to Tasmania are many.
Apart from these, the state’s peaceful lifestyle, career opportunities, affordable property prices, reputable schools and a globally recognized university like UTAS are attracting skilled candidates towards this state.
To apply for this visa subclass, the candidate needs to select an occupation from the expanded Tasmanian Skilled Occupations List (TSOL) and provide valid evidence of employment opportunities in that particular occupation in the state or meet study requirement. Candidates may also be sponsored by employers for subclass 187 (RSMS).
